Advice To New Players

I don’t know how many new players even read this blog. Heck, I think the only people who read this blog are those that are in the Ch’know group. However, if by chance a new player finds this blog, here is some advice to you as a wise old 1 yr and 5 month old player in SL…TAKE CLASSES!

That’s right…take as many classes as you can in SL. Take them on building, scripting, textures, inventory, etc. Most of them are free and they are all very, very helpful!

When I first started SL, all I did was shop, shop and shop. I had a job and I have lived in a few places but that gets boring really, really quick! I am just now starting to get into the creative part of SL and I am really enjoying it. If I had started a year ago, I just think about how much more ahead of the game I would be now and how many lindens I may have saved myself.

See, that lamp or end table that you paid $20L to $100L for? You could have made yourself in a free building class. That simple, simple thing you have been trying to build that has you tearing your RL hair out for a day in a ½ now…you could have learned the simple trick to take care of it by taking a free building class.

That simple script you bought on SLExchange to turn a light off or on with a touch….you get for free in the classes you take and you can learn how to make adjustments to it and it is full perm.

So the bottom line is: EDUCATE YOURSELF!

• Under Category, find events
• Then search by Education, pick a day and you will see a long list of things that may interest you.

I Need Help! Sorry, Being A Drama Queen!

As you know, I have been playing with making furniture with some full perm textures and sculpties that I bought and I often toy with the idea of having my own store. I have also been taking some classes, etc. While I ponder these deep thoughts, I have some questions that I was hoping you could answer for me as SL consumers or builders or business women/men:

Is it better to start small but in a high traffic area with possibly lower prims but higher rent? This would prevent me from putting out a lot except for maybe pictures of the furniture. I think it would be better to have it out but I’m not sure.

I am thinking of making the furniture modify, no copy, no transfer and then put a note card saying if they royally f-up the furniture, I would be more than happy to help them get it back in order. Or do you prefer copy in your furniture?

How important are a lot of animations in your furniture to you? Do you prefer the animation menus or is just not having pose balls but the animations in the furniture enough? I have one to three poses in the furniture. It depends on the piece.

I don’t expect to compete with The Loft or other big furniture designers. It is just something that I am enjoying doing. I’m not trying to get rich in SL or RL. I would just like to make enough to cover my rent and have some shopping money to buy things for myself and gadgets and textures to create new furniture.

It is funny how my RL thought patterns are the same that hold me back in SL. Thoughts like “It will be too hard and complicated; I’m not good enough; I don’t understand this or that; I’ll fail at it.

Anyway, enough Emo talk! Anything else that you can think of that you have as advice or that you wish you knew when you started out or that you learned the hard way, would be much appreciated!

Before and After

So, here I am in some before and after pics. They look like yearbook photos! LOL!. The first one was in some skin made to look like some playboy bunny and my first GurlyWood Wild Thing hair. I had a hard time parting with that skin because I just felt that it was me since it was my first.

The second photo is in my KA Asia Skin and Analog Dog hair.

I Built Some Furniture...well kind of....

So I have been looking and looking and looking for furniture and I could not find quite what I was looking for. I would find a bedroom set that I liked but not really a living room set to go with it and vice versa. Sometimes, I would find something that I liked but it was more than what I was willing to pay for...$3000 for bed..no thanks! Then sometimes, I would see something and think to myself..I think I could make that or the prims were too much, etc, etc.

So, I went and bought a bunch of textures and a full perm sculptie furniture set and I then proceeded to tear the furniture apart and use what I wanted to make what I wanted. Some peices I kept their shape or maybe just added to it with alot more pillows and rearranging. I got ideas from some SL and RL stores (gasp, I know, I know..I hope that does not make me a thief or anything but really are there any new ideas out there when it comes to designing this stuff). Plus, I saw some furniture designers out there using the same textures I bought and full perm sculptie furniture too.

So, below are pics of what I made. So to not take credit where credit is not due...I did not make the lamps or bedroom end tables. These are from Corey Edo. The basket with the ferns...not mine...The Loft. The accessories I already had and others made those. The shrine to myself on the wall....all me baby, all me! Oh yea, I love my SL self!

Everything else, I put together or re-put together or made with prims.

A Dog and a Dolphin!

So I went out and bought the Corgi this weekend and named him Buddy after my dog. It is so cute and for $700 I think it is a real bargain. It is a little more than some Zooby dogs but it does sooooo much more and it is a lot less than the VKC dogs. I love how it sleeps and eats and it is just so gosh darn cute!

I also bought a dolpin that I named Flipper. It pops up periodically on my land and makes that little dolphin laugh. I was afraid that I wouldn't have enough water area for it but it doesn't need much. It was only six prims. I thought it would be a lot more! I am posting some pics below.

Sixteen Usless Things About Me

1. I am 40 years old.
2. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up so that is why I have been doing administrative type work for over twenty years.
3. I am terrible at finishing what I start...another reason why I am still just an admin.
4. Growing up I wanted to be a vet, a sociologist and a guitar player in a heavy metal band. Now, I have just settled for giving my dog his daily meds, trying to figure out those around me and playing Guitar Hero.
5. Marrying my husband and leaving NM were two of the best decisions that I have ever made.
6. I am terrible at making decisions and would rather leave them up to others...Again why I am still doing admin work.
7. I live my life in fear...fear of dying, fear of leaving the garage door open, fear of leaving my flat iron plugged in and burning down the house and then being denied by the insurance company and winding up in the poor house. Fear of something happening to my family and my dog. Fear of losing my job. Fear of getting in a car accident and hurting myself or dying or hurting or killing someone else. Then I would have to go to jail and be someone's bitch. Yes, folks...I have all those thoughts running through my head before 6:30am in the morning.
8. I am an introvert and I NEED alone time to refresh myself. Being around people all the time, is just exhausting to me!
9. My husband is my best friends. I really don't have any female best friends. I have a good friend but I wouldn't say a best.
10. I tend to shy away from female friends. I hate to say this but based on my experience women can be bitchy and catty and backstab...alot! And I am not saying that I have always been an innocent party in this either. I have been the victim and the perpetrator.
11. Good God...16 of these...what else can I come up with.
12. I have a brother who is seven years younger than me. One of my biggest regrets in life was that I was not a better older sister. I was in HS when he was in elementary school so I was your typical selfish, self-centered teen who wanted to hang out with her friends rather than go see her little brother play little league games, etc.
13. I had LASIK surgery about five years ago. Another great decision in my life that I am glad that I made.
14. I hate to exercise and I hate to diet. I am trying to do bother right now and failing miserably at it.
15. I am hispanic and I wish I had picked a last name in SL that sounded more hispanic instead of asian.
16. I have always like to read since I was little. When I was younger, I read Archie and Betty and Veronica comic books religiously.
